My parents took my girlfriend and I here for dinner to celebrate, the service was good and the decor is out dated and we were the only people in there for dinner on a friday, I got their take on the cordon blue chicken with a beef soup starter the cordon blue chicken was interesting cooked a little unevenly and the ham was just set on top of the chicken and smothered in cheese and the beef soup was greasy and inedible the beef was weird and chewy a very disappointing start but ended on an okay note not somewhere I'll likely go again more for your grand parents.

When I ate here the service wasn't that great and the food was OK. My food was decent but the some of the others I went with said that their stake was not cooked properly.

Part of me doesn't want to review this place because of several things. 1. This is in Lecanto, a tiny town near Inverness where most people wouldn't find anything of interest to do or see. It's also not in the middle of any route from a point A to a point B as far as I know. 2. Because it is a small community, full of snowbirds (with all sorts of accents), this restaurant is most likely fully supported by the locals, due to it being there for quite a long time and by not being a franchise. 3. Because every time I've eaten there, I have been graciously barred from paying for my own food by my girlfriend's grandpa. However, it is a place I've been to a couple of times and I am on a quest to review these places. Let's get started by saying that the service is great. The owner and his family are always present and eager to serve you. They will check on you no matter how busy it is and I've been there on Christmas Day, when it probably gets swamped by the virtue of being one of the few places open in this holiday. Décor -wise you got two very distinct sides. The left side of the restaurant (as you come in) is populated with replicas of sailboats and galleons, which have always been appealing to me. It definitely tells you why it's named The Boat House. Unfortunately, the right side of the restaurant looks like a later addition to the building with not a single boat replica around. Yes, there are fish nets hanging from the ceiling, but unless you check if your back neck muscles can still crane your curious head you'd probably miss them. If you just look at the walls and what's readily around you, it could very well be a diner in a nursing home or the break room of any generic business. On to the menu from which I've had two different plates. One was the roast quail dinner and I cannot remember if it was good or bad, so I'll settle for your standard chicken plate with an exotic bird playing the stand-in role. The other plate was broiled grouper and I think I should have opted for fried. The fish was healthy-tasting for sure, but that also meant that it was as bland as supermarket lent-season baked cod. I'm not one to shy away from fishy taste, I welcome it instead, but by broiling it, the grouper loses most of its taste, whatever that may be (I'm not a grouper expert since I've often had it fried and sandwiched). In hindsight, I would have preferred anything else, even if it would've been less healthy. I also heard the chicken marsala was not at its best, somewhat gaining a sweet-like flavor instead of the typical mushroomy taste that one associates with marsala. The side dishes were very good though. The hot bread, mini-mushrooms side (vegetables of the day), and mashed potatoes were all enjoyable. The soup was micro-portioned though in comparison with the generous helping of salad (with good house vinaigrette). I cannot speak for the prime rib since that's not something I would order in most cases, but our rare-meat carnivorous hosts always order it and enjoy it. In conclusion, the success of this restaurant is probably a combination of factors predominantly revolving around the fact that it is a place owned by locals serving locals in a small, tight-knit community. If this restaurant was surrounded by competitors in Orlando, it would most likely not be nearly as popular and I would probably not frequent it.

I had the local favorite, the grouper sandwich, and it was very tasty. I would definitely order it again, I know the other people who ordered it at my table enjoyed it too. I tried my husband's French Dip, it was alright, but I was happier with my choice.

I took my mom out to this place on Mother's Day. There was only a special menu for that day but the food was still pretty good but not filling enough. My mother's birthday was just a couple of weeks after that so she wanted to try it again. It was on a Sunday before noon but it was still pretty crowded with the locals who appear to be the staple patrons at The Boathouse. We were given a breakfast and lunch menu only; I can't remember the last time I went to a restaurant and you weren't able to order dinner items anytime on a Sunday. The lunch items consisted only of a hamburger or light sandwiches; I don't go to a steakhouse and seafood restaurant to order a burger or a chicken club with a smattering of fries! It was taking forever just to get our drinks; we hadn't even had our drink order taken yet as the employee-owners were very loudly yacking with said locals; Crystal River appears to be very cliquish. So my mom and I just walked out and will never go again.
